The Anatomy of Access: Making Anatomy Courses and Learning Environments Accessible for Students with Accommodated Characteristics.
Description: This session will feature panelists who will discuss their perspectives as learning accommodations administrators or as anatomy educators and/or anatomy learners requiring accommodations regarding mobility, neurodivergence, Deaf or hard of hearing, and/or blindness or visual impairment needs.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the seeking and acquiring learning accommodations processes, in general, and the specialized accommodations for disabled, neurodivergent, Deaf or hard of hearing, and/or Blind or visually impaired individuals.
- Discuss accommodations administrators’, anatomy educators’, and/or anatomy learners’ varying perspectives on individuals’ pursuing and receiving these aforementioned specialized accommodations.
- Identify common and/or potential barriers to students’ researching and obtaining accommodations, in general, and/or specialized accommodations for the aforementioned characteristics and possible ways of mitigating such barriers (e.g., technological, artificial intelligence, etc.).
- Explain various practices for accommodating students with specialized ability, neurodivergent, Deaf or hard of hearing, and/or Blind or visually impaired characteristics, using specific, real-world examples or lived experiences where applicable.
- Reflect on the traditional and emerging misconceptions or misunderstandings about individuals with specialized characteristics and about individuals with accommodations for those characteristics.
- Analyze methods for dispelling the misconceptions or misunderstandings surrounding these individuals.
